Issue 2:1 | Excerpt :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Berry True Chocolate A visit to Lillie Belle Farms in Jacskonville, Oregon
“I did. Pretty cool, huh?” the guy replies casually, making no effort whatsoever to impress me. “I make all our designs.” Glancing over my shoulder, I discover he’s wandered off to fiddle with another door toward the back of the room. So this is the guy, I think to myself. This is Jeff Shepherd, owner and chocolatier of Lillie Belle Farms. Looking at him over in the corner, I find myself distracted by the psychedelic pattern on his T-shirt. I still haven’t figured out how I’m going to have a serious conversation about the art of chocolate making with a guy who looks like a bouncer at a Bob Dylan concert. Later, when I learn that Jeff’s a long-time fan of the Grateful Dead, a lot of things about him will make sense. But right now I’m still at a loss. When I first met him at the San Francisco Fancy Food Show, Jeff was dressed in a button-down shirt and khakis, his hair was combed, and he came across like a former software engineer from the early days of Silicon Valley. So much for first impressions.>>>
