The Beloved Schoggi
A tour of the Lindt & Sprüngli chocolate factory
Kilchberg, Switzerland
In Kilchberg, even the slightest breeze can fill the air with the
aroma of chocolate. At the local Lindt & Sprüngli schoggi (Swiss
German for “factory”), however, it is said that you truly only
belong when you no longer can smell the schoggi in the air.
Chocoladefabriken Lindt & Sprüngli was founded in 1899
through Chocolat Sprüngli AG’s acquisition of Rodolphe Lindt &
Fils. (Confiserie Sprüngli of Zürich is no longer associated with
Lindt & Sprüngli.) It is one of the oldest and largest chocolate
makers in the world. With over 6,000 employees and CHF 2 billion
(~US$1.5 billion) in annual sales in 2005, Lindt’s key to success
stems from its ability to adapt its Swiss chocolate-making
traditions and expertise to each market it serves. The original
factory in Kilchberg, although just one of many Lindt facilities,
continues to serve as the standard bearer for the company’s
worldwide operations. >>>
